Teaching Activities:
Undergraduate, graduate and adult education courses in secondary wood product
manufacturing, production, equipment maintenance, finish application technology,
supervision, 32mm, architectural woodwork, kitchen cabinetry and upholstery.
Counseled students with respect to student research, writing resumes and
obtaining employment. Faculty club sponsor and student/ scholarship
recruiter.
Research Performed:
Prepared economic development study on furniture plant location for Southeast
Kansas. Performed research for Graco, Binks, DeVilbiss, Wagner and Kremlin in
the use of high transfer efficiency spray equipment involving air assisted
airless (AAA) and high volume low pressure (HVLP) studies. Also conducted
research and investigated (i) air filtration media styles to reduce pollution,
(ii) spray technology using high solids finishes supplied by dual acting pumps.
(iii) waterborne versus traditional coatings technology, (iv) curtain coater
pressure head versus gravity feed, (v) forced drying using infrared versus
ultra-violet, (vi) high speed stain and automated wipe applications, (vii)
cutting tool technology with regards to the application of stains and top coats,
(viii) molder feasibility study for a southeast Kansas industry, and (ix)
feasibility study and a site search for a picture frame company.
Community Service:
Industry: Conducted in-house
workshops for various regional and national manufacturers on sales, supervision
and employee’s technical training. Assisted failing company to increase
production from zero units to 50,000 units per week by redesigning production
flow. Trained personnel from line employees to upper management.
Consulted with Kansas State Department of Economic Development with respect to
the attraction of new industry. Recruited employees and developed training
programs for relocated woodworking companies.
School: VICA representative at
collegiate level. Worked with recruitment office dean recruiting students by
assisting recruiters with career days at local high schools and community
colleges in four-state region. Prepared 2+2 plan with out of state
two-year public institution involving wood technology program. Conducted
in-service seminars for high school faculty in western portion of Kansas.
Faculty representative overseeing design and remodeling construction to
transform 24,000 square foot building into new wood technology center.
Responsible for soliciting donations for laboratory interior and equipment.
Developed the multimedia room and designed and built the electrical drops over
each bench in the heavy industry lab. Prepared interactive video/audio
system. A member of various Pittsburg State University committees
including Library Committee, School Safety Committee on EPA/OSHA, New Course
Review Committee and Marketing Committee. A member of various Woodworking
Department committees including Course Updating Committee and Committee on
Applications Review of new hires.
Consultant: Industrial
researcher/consultant/trainer during school summer and holiday vacations.
Presented national and individual seminars for associations and companies, acted
as troubleshooter for technical difficulties, lectured at trade association
meetings, conducted research and presented a variety of recommendations on plant
and/or finish room layout, OSHA, EPA, machinery selection, color matching and
